Uganda To Dispose $7m Worth of Expired Covid-19 Vaccines Purchased On Loan

An audit study states that the World Bank loaned money to acquire approximately 5.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccinations, worth at 28.1 billion Ugandan shillings ($7.3 million; £5.8 million), which had expired, causing a substantial loss for the Ugandan government.

The report, which Uganda's Auditor General John Muwanga delivered to parliament, also showed that other medications totaling $8.6 million—mostly HIV antiretroviral medications, or ARVs—had expired as a result of modifications to the World Health Organization's recommended treatment standards.

Authorities have announced that the expired vaccines will be withdrawn from health facilities and destroyed. The head of Uganda's drug procurement agency, Moses Kamabare, expressed concerns about the increasing losses, stating that the total losses from expired COVID vaccines are expected to surpass $78 million by the end of this year. Kamabare also highlighted the diminishing demand for COVID vaccines, leading to further expiration of doses.
