Artisanal Gold Mine Collapse Claims Over 70 Lives in Mali

An artisanal gold mine collapsed last week in southwest Mali, causing a terrible catastrophe that left over 70 people dead, according to officials. This incident is only one more in a string of mining mishaps in an area prone to them.

Senior National Geology and Mining Directorate official Karim Bethe confirmed the event to The Associated Press, calling it a sad accident. In addition, a local councilman and Oumar Sidibe, a spokesperson for the gold miners in the town of Kangaba, confirmed the death toll with the AFP news agency while narrating the terrifying mine collapse experience.

Details surrounding the cause of the collapse remain unclear, although the Ministry of Mines released a statement expressing deep regret over the incident. The ministry called on miners and local communities to adhere to safety protocols and emphasized the necessity of compliance with safety standards.

Furthermore, a ministry spokesperson, Baye Coulibaly, disclosed to the Reuters news agency that the gold panners had excavated shafts without adhering to mandated safety standards, despite previous advisories against such practices.

In response to the tragic event, Mali’s government extended condolences to the affected families and the nation at large. Additionally, it urged nearby communities and miners to meticulously observe safety regulations and operate solely within designated gold panning zones.
