Dangote Refinery Set to Start Production

The Dangote Refinery, poised to revolutionize the production of refined petroleum products, recently achieved a major milestone with the reception of the sixth consignment of crude supplied by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL). This key delivery brings the total consignment to 6 million barrels, a significant step toward initiating operations at the world's largest single-train refinery.

This recent receipt of one million barrels of Agbami crude via the vessel MT ALMI SUN marks the completion of the scheduled 6 million barrels required to kickstart operations at the Dangote Refinery. Notably, this latest batch complements the earlier deliveries, indicating substantial progress towards realizing the refinery's operational capacity.

Notable among the prior consignments is the first delivery of one million barrels of Agbami crude grade by Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited (STASCO), a key player within the Nigerian and global energy trading landscape. Since this initial delivery, the Dangote Refinery has systematically received additional one million barrel batches of crude, culminating in the recent discharge of the 6 million barrels at the Single Point Mooring (SPM-C2) at the Dangote Offshore Oil Terminal (DOOT).

Managing Director of Dangote Ports Operations, Mr. Akin Omole, underscored the significance of these deliveries during the maiden reception, highlighting the refinery's forthcoming operational timeline. Notably, he emphasized that the completion of the 6 million barrels consignment would pave the way for the refinery's initial run and the commencement of diesel, aviation fuel, and LPG production, with subsequent plans to produce Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

The impending operation of the Dangote Refinery bears substantial implications, as it is poised to play a pivotal role in resolving fuel supply challenges not only within Nigeria but also across West African countries. Designed with the capability to process Nigerian and other African crude grades, as well as crudes from the Middle East and the United States, the refinery exhibits an inclusive operational framework.

The refinery's capacity extends to meeting 100% of Nigeria's refined product requirements, encompassing gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and aviation jet fuel, while also enabling surplus production of these refined products for export. With a robust infrastructure including two Single Point Mooring systems and three discharge points for petroleum products, the refinery promises to enhance efficiency in both import and export operations.

Further enhancing its operational capacities, the Dangote Refinery boasts the capability to handle 2,900 trucks per day at its truck loading gantries and features a self-sufficient marine facility designed to accommodate vessels of global scale. Notably, the refinery's refined products conform to Euro V specifications, aligning with international emission norms, including US EPA, European standards, and Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) regulatory requirements, as well as those outlined by the African Refiners and Distribution Association (ARDA).
