Controller and Accountant-General Sued for Contesting in NPP Primaries

The political landscape in South Dayi, Ghana, is heating up as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for the region, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has taken legal action against the Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem. This move comes in response to Kwaning-Bosompem's decision to participate in the parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a move that has sparked controversy within the political circles of Ghana.

In this legal spat, Mr. Dafeamekpor has filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent Kwaning-Bosompem from vying in the upcoming parliamentary primaries, scheduled for Saturday, January 27. Dafeamekpor's argument pivots on the contention that it violates the constitution for the Controller and Accountant-General to simultaneously maintain his current position in the civil service while actively pursuing a parliamentary slot within a political party.

Specifically, Dafeamekpor is pushing for a court order that would declare Kwaning-Bosompem's involvement in the NPP parliamentary primaries as unconstitutional due to his status as a civil servant. Additionally, Dafeamekpor seeks an interlocutory injunction to prevent Kwaning-Bosompem from representing himself as the Controller and Accountant General while simultaneously pursuing candidacy in the Akim Swedru parliamentary race.

This legal action underscores the intricate legal and ethical dilemmas centering around the intersection of public office and political involvement. Notably, it reflects broader conversations within Ghana, as some citizens have been urging the Accountant General to step down from his role before entering the primaries.

However, amidst this legal tussle, the Communications Director of the NPP, Richard Ahiagbah, has downplayed the calls for the Accountant General to resign before participating in the party's primaries. Ahiagbah has emphasized the absence of explicit rules barring the Controller and Accountant-General from pursuing a political office while retaining his current position.
