Asantehene Dethrones Offinso Queen Mother For Disrespect
Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, the queen mother of the Offinso Traditional Area, has been destooled by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, for her flagrant disobedience to the kingdom. This historic decision was reached on Thursday, January 11, 2024, during the first meeting of the Asanteman Traditional Council of the new year.
In 2024, the Golden Stool occupier has deposed a traditional leader for the first time, with Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko's destoolment. Following several offenses, she repeatedly ignored Otumfuo Osei Tutu II's summonses, and for this reason, she was banished.
The Asantehene charged Nana Dwamena Akenteng II, the recently appointed chief of Offinso, with finding a new queen mother to help rule the region during the ceremony where she was to take an oath of fealty. "I give the town to you alone," Otumfuo declared, addressing Nana Dwamena Akenteng II. There is no queen mother in you. Once you have settled down, choose a new queen mother to assist you in carrying out your duty. A queen mother who will always be available for us is what we need."

This decision is being made against the turbulent background of events preceding the enthronement of a new Offinso stool holder, which was prompted by protests among the region's kingmakers when Nana Wiafe Akenten III passed away in October 2021.
The queen mother's failure to choose a suitable royal from the Offinso Royal Family to fill the stool was a major source of contention, which resulted in the controversial choice of Dr. Desmond Kofi Koduah Sarpong, who was previously the board chairman of the Asante Kotoko Sporting Club. But another group of kingmakers fiercely opposed this nomination, questioning the nominee's royal ancestry and sparking a broad debate.

Subsequently, the Asante Traditional Council initiated a committee to investigate these claims, ultimately finding that Dr. K.K Sarpong, the nominee presented by the queen mother, lacked ties to the Ahyirem Royal Family. This revelation fuelled tensions within the area, leading to a directive from the Asantehene for the royals to select a candidate for investiture.
Ultimately, the longstanding chieftaincy dispute saw resolution with the presentation of Nana Amoako Opoku, hailing from the Offinso Ahyirem Royal Family, as the newly installed chief. Nana Amoako Opoku, a distinguished figure known for his agricultural prowess, had an extensive background as a custodian of Asante history prior to assuming this esteemed role.
