During the inauguration ceremony in Sunyani, President Nana Akufo-Addo expressed his commitment, along with his government and other stakeholders, to transform the Sunyani Teaching Hospital into a leading medical institution of excellence. The event was graced by prominent regional chiefs and community members, signifying the significance of this transformative milestone.

The journey of the Sunyani Regional Hospital, which commenced operations in 2003, has culminated in its elevation to a teaching hospital. Following the approval of the memorandum by Cabinet in February 2023, the 350-bed capacity facility has been designated to provide specialized services, marking a pivotal milestone in the region's healthcare landscape.

President Akufo-Addo, represented by the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, highlighted the government's unwavering commitment to enhancing the nation's healthcare. This commitment is exemplified through various ongoing projects such as the Agenda 111 Hospital initiatives, including projects in Berekum, Jinijini, and Dormaa Amasu, all within the Bono Region. Additionally, a 60-bed capacity infectious disease center is being developed at the STH to strengthen the country's ability to manage infectious disease outbreaks and enhance preparedness for future health crises, among various other initiatives.

Furthermore, the establishment of the Sunyani Teaching Hospital expands tertiary healthcare delivery and creates enhanced training opportunities for medical professionals within and beyond the region. President Akufo-Addo envisioned that the forthcoming establishment of a Medical School at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), alongside other educational institutions in Sunyani, would complement the new hospital's mandate and capabilities.

The President emphasized the significance of the inauguration, viewing it as the initiation of a journey towards establishing the hospital as a Center of Excellence in Ghana and the West African sub-region, with potential for medical tourism. The aspiration includes offering advanced services such as kidney transplantation, mirroring the successes of similar services at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), to address non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Ghana. President Akufo-Addo pledged continuing government support for the hospital's groundbreaking journey and called for collaborative efforts and investment in healthcare delivery.

Dr. Cardinal Newton, the Medical Director of STH, recognized the new responsibilities and immediate needs associated with the transformation. He stressed that this conversion demands substantial resources, both financial and human, along with the development of innovative teaching methods.
