Sam George: Galamsey Activities Increased During the NPP Regime

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, has raised concerns about the rise of illegal mining activities, also known as Galamsey, in Ghana since the government led by President Akufo-Addo took office in 2017. According to him, this surge in galamsey has resulted in significant pollution of the country's water bodies and the destruction of lands.

In an interview on JoyNews' AM Show, the outspoken MP alleged that the galamsey activities were being carried out to generate funds for the operations of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP). He claimed that the party needed money, so they resorted to destroying the water bodies with galamsey. He acknowledged that galamsey existed before this government assumed power, but it was not as severe. He pointed out the visible degradation of rivers like the River Pra and the River Densu, stating that they were not in such a poor state prior to the current government's tenure.

The MP's assertions echo similar statements made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at a galamsey press conference held the previous month. Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, accused the President of not taking real action to support the NPP's supposedly anti-galamsey campaign. He described the government's measures and strategies against illegal mining as a deceptive ploy and alleged that some NPP members and government officials were involved in the galamsey activities.

Sam George supported this claim, arguing that the NPP was solely focused on making money regardless of the negative consequences of galamsey on the nation. He criticized the party for risking the destruction of water bodies and stated that their actions demonstrated a disregard for the environment and the well-being of Ghanaians.

However, the government maintains that it is committed to eradicating illegal mining. The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, affirmed that President Akufo-Addo has consistently shown determination to combat this issue. Despite recent allegations of high-level political interference, the Minister reassured the public that he has the President's support in the fight against illegal mining.
