Reports claiming that soldiers deployed to Mepe in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region had allegedly abandoned their duty post while providing support to flood victims have been denied by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). In response to various media reports and concerns raised by Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the GAF has issued a statement to clarify the situation.

According to the statement signed by M.A Larbi Naval Captain, the Director General in charge of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces, the information circulating about the soldiers' withdrawal is inaccurate. The statement further explained that military personnel had not received any orders to withdraw from Mepe or any other communities affected by the flooding caused by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.

Instead, the relief operations in the affected areas are being carried out in different phases. As the situation in Mepe had been brought under considerable control, attention was redirected to other communities, such as Battor. These operations, known as "Operation Boafo," involve the Ghana Navy's Riverine Command and the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Army.

The Ghana Armed Forces emphasized their commitment to providing urgent, equitable, and appropriate support to all individuals and communities affected by the flooding. They assured the public that efforts were ongoing to assist those impacted by the spillage. The return of the soldiers to their duty posts was confirmed by the MP for North Tongu, who took to Twitter to acknowledge that the initial order for withdrawal had been reversed.

The MP also emphasized the need for empathy and justice for the over 12,000 displaced constituents affected by the flooding. He emphasized that those affected did not deserve their current predicament caused by the spillage. These concerns highlight the importance of ensuring continued support and assistance for the affected communities.

The prompt response and clarification from the Ghana Armed Forces aim to address the concerns surrounding the deployment of military personnel and to ensure the provision of continued support for the affected communities. As the relief efforts progress, collaboration among stakeholders will play a crucial role in providing the necessary resources and assistance to those impacted by the flooding.
