Akufo-Addo Must Sign Anti-LGBTQ+ bill – Opuni Frimpong

Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong, former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, underscored the importance of President Akufo-Addo's signing of the Anti-LGBTQ bill, describing it as a matter of national significance requiring decisive action.

He highlighted that while not all Ghanaians are opposed to LGBTQ+ rights, there is a substantial consensus among traditional leaders, faith-based organizations, Christians, Muslims, and civil society groups against it.

During an appearance on JoyNews' AM Show, Dr. Opuni Frimpong emphasized that Parliament has already deliberated on and passed the bill, making President Akufo-Addo's signature crucial for the nation. He expressed concerns about moral issues that have caused divisions in Ghana and stressed the need for the President to complete the process by signing the bill.

Dr. Opuni-Frimpong cautioned that delaying the approval could lead to a national response during the election season and could politicize the issue unnecessarily. He noted that despite differing opinions on the matter, there has been a level of cohesion during the parliamentary discussions, which could be disrupted if the process is prolonged.

The clergyman further urged President Akufo-Addo to finalize the approval process, stating that while individuals could still challenge LGBTQ matters in court or Parliament, the President's action is essential for resolving the ongoing debate surrounding the issue.
