Kelvin Kiptum had emerged as a rising star in the marathon scene, making headlines in 2023 when he established himself as a formidable competitor, challenging the likes of his fellow Kenyan, Eliud Kipchoge, a legend in the sport. His moment of glory came in Chicago last October when he surpassed Kipchoge's achievements by completing the marathon distance of 26.2 miles in an impressive time of two hours and 35 seconds.

Both Kiptum and Kipchoge had been selected as part of Kenya's preliminary marathon team for the upcoming Paris Olympics, a testament to their exceptional talent and potential on the global stage. The sudden loss of Kiptum has left the sports world in shock, with tributes pouring in from various quarters.

Kenyan Sports Minister Ababu Namwamba expressed his grief on X, describing the loss as "devastatingly sickening," acknowledging the void left by Kiptum's passing. Raila Odinga, the opposition leader and former prime minister of Kenya, hailed Kiptum as a true hero and a symbol of pride for Kenyan athletics. Sebastian Coe, the president of World Athletics, lauded Kiptum's legacy, emphasizing his remarkable accomplishments in the sport.

The unfortunate accident that claimed Kiptum's life occurred late on a Sunday night, with reports indicating that he was behind the wheel when the vehicle lost control, resulting in a fatal rollover. While Kiptum and his coach lost their lives on the spot, a third passenger, a female, sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Just days before the tragic incident, Kiptum's team had revealed plans for him to attempt a groundbreaking feat at the Rotterdam marathon - aiming to complete the distance in under two hours, a milestone that has yet to be conquered in open competition. Kiptum's journey to success had been remarkable, marked by rapid achievements and groundbreaking performances.

Starting his marathon career in 2022, Kiptum quickly rose to prominence with notable wins and record-breaking times, showcasing his talent and determination. His strategic approach to races, pacing himself alongside competitors before making decisive moves, set him apart as a formidable force in the sport. Despite humble beginnings and financial constraints, Kiptum's dedication and perseverance propelled him to international acclaim.

His coach, Gervais Hakizimana, a retired Rwandese runner, played a pivotal role in shaping Kiptum's career and guiding him towards his record-breaking achievements. The bond between coach and athlete, forged over years of training and dedication, reflected a journey of mutual respect and shared success.
