Parliament To Decide On SDA's Petition to Reschedule December 7 Election From Saturday

A member of Parliament's Christian Fellowship, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, has disclosed that the Attorney General's opinion on the Seventh-day Adventist Church's request to change the election date from December 7 to December 8 is being awaited by Parliament.

Bedzrah said in an interview, "We're waiting to see if the Attorney General will hear them out and get back to us. After that, we'll review the petition to determine whether or not adopting that change is worthwhile."

The clash between the election date of December 7 and the Sabbath, a holy day devoted to God's worship, has led the church to advocate for a change in the election timetable. According to the church, the first or second Tuesday would be better suited for fostering inclusive democracy.

The Ho West MP emphasized that although the December 7 date has been established, their petition should be given consideration due to the substantial membership of the church. He noted, "If you look at the numbers about 395,000 members. It clearly shows that it has at least close to about one per cent of Ghana’s population and so it is worth listening to them and also look at the merit in it."

In response to this situation, Private Legal Practitioner, Martin Kpebu, proposed early voting for the church similar to what is done for security agencies. However, he acknowledged that this could potentially burden parties in opposition unless the state is willing to absorb the associated costs.
