Akufo-Addo Disapproves GRA's Request for SML System Operation Amid Probe

President Nana Akufo-Addo has turned down the Ghana Revenue Authority's proposal to keep the Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited (SML) system operational.

Up until further orders were given after the investigation was over, the GRA had maintained that the technology was necessary for real-time data recording. The request was sent in a letter dated January 16, 2024, which was signed by Rev. Dr. Amishaddai Owusu-Amoah, the GRA Commissioner General.

The President gave instructions that the contract would be suspended until the audit was finished and KPMG turned in its final report. This choice was made in response to SML's concerns over possible disruptions to operations that could arise from the planned halt of activities.

On January 2, President Akufo-Addo appointed international audit and accounting firm, KPMG, to audit the contract and submit a report within two weeks. However, in response to KPMG's request for an extension, the President has granted an extension, with the new deadline set for Friday, 23rd February 2024.
