The call for a relook at resource allocation within Ghana's education landscape has been raised by the President of Garden City University College (GCUC), Prof. Emeritus Anthony Apeke Adimado. His appeal, made during the 15th congregation of the University, emphasized the need for private universities to also benefit from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

In his address, Prof. Adimado highlighted the significant infrastructural challenges faced by private universities and the critical role that GETFund support could play in addressing these issues. He stressed that such allocations would go a long way in bolstering the efforts of private universities to provide quality education and infrastructure to their students. Additionally, he also urged for support from corporate bodies and individuals to aid the institution's pursuit of excellence.

The President's plea reflects a broader discourse surrounding the equitable distribution of educational resources and the role of private institutions in national development. The acknowledgment of the educational contributions made by private universities, coupled with the pressing need for support, further illuminates the gravity of the matter.

The Challenge for Private Universities

Private universities in Ghana have continually grappled with infrastructural deficiencies and resource limitations. While they are pivotal in shaping the educational landscape and contributing to human capital development, their struggle to access funding for infrastructure projects remains a persistent concern.

The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), established through an Act of Parliament in 2000, primarily focuses on complementing government efforts in educational infrastructure provision within the public sector. This exclusion of private universities from the fund's mandate has led to consistent appeals for an amendment to accommodate their specific needs.

The Diverging Perspectives

The clamoring for support from private tertiary institutions has sparked a debate on the integration of public and private funds, with the government voicing concerns about the potential complexities that could arise from such a mix. Emphasizing the private nature of running a university, the government has underscored the constitutional rights of private entities to establish and operate tertiary institutions, provided they meet accreditation standards.

On the other hand, advocates for private institutions argue that the contributions of such universities to national development warrant support from public funds. They contend that private universities are equally instrumental in nurturing the country's human capital and should not be sidelined in the broader educational agenda.

GCUC's Forward Trajectory

The 15th congregation of Garden City University College marked a significant milestone with the graduation of 1,711 students. Prof. Adimado also hinted at the institution's plans to introduce new undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Agribusiness, Ophthalmic Dispensing Technology, Midwifery, Nursing, Cybersecurity, and Agribusiness Management.

Furthermore, the University College's founder, Mr. Albert Acquah, highlighted a shift in focus towards aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reflecting a commitment to holistic societal development.

Supporting the university's vision, the special guest of honor, Prof. Nana Anokye, Director of the Division of Global Health at Brunel University London, emphasized the importance of giving back to society. His inspiring words underscored the reciprocal nature of societal contributions, encouraging graduates to invest their time, talents, and resources for the benefit of broader society.

In addition to his appeal for educational support, Prof. Adimado took the opportunity to humbly request urgent attention to the rehabilitation of the road from Airport Roundabout through Kenyase to Antoa. This multifaceted appeal reflects the College's commitment not only to academic excellence but also to the surrounding infrastructure crucial for the holistic development of the community.
